Quote of the Day

"There is violence in learning. We can not learn something without eating it, yet we can not really learn it either without letting it eat us" Peter Elbow, Embracing Contraries in the Teaching Process

Introduction

Hello!

I am writing to you from the comfort of a sterile computer lab in an English 704:Pedagogical Grammar session. How did I get here? The crazy, winding story of a young girl who always wanted to be teacher, while enthralling, shall be bumped up to more recent events. At this time last year I found out that the middle school I was working, and thriving, in Pasadena, closed. More specifically, my school merged with another, cutting the faculty by half.
Without knowing who would be let go and who would be asked to stay, I sought out a change for my life. I loved teaching middle school and would relish the opportunity to do so in the future. However, I have always yearned for even higher education and my sights were constantly on the "Masters". Without much time, I applied for this program and applied for a position at the new school with faith that God would provide an answer. Unfortunately, or fortunately, I was accepted to both prospects. However, the school limited my contact hours with students and I decided to move forward, not backward.
So, I wound up here at SFSU in a program that still causes me moments of trepidation. Leaving my friends, family, and a job I loved has made transitioning in San Francisco difficult. I am only just now beginning to really make friends and get excited by my coursework. Dreams of teaching my students have not stopped, but have given me a new drive towards the next chapter in my life. With a strong desire to get back into the classroom, I am intending to take part in the GTAship.

As for the future, I thought I wanted to go back to middle or secondary, but now I am not sure. Whether I go on to work towards a PhD or I teach FYC in college or I go after my initial goals. Hopefully, my readers will be a part of it.
